Our program: the Career Track at Riverside

We train at Riverside Municipal Airport (KRAL), about 45 minutes inland from Irvine and an hour from Long Beach. Every airplane is a factory-new Tecnam P-Mentor with a glass cockpit, and every one carries a whole-airplane parachute. One instructor, one student, every lesson.

$89,000. About nine months. A parachute on every airplane.

The Career Track takes you from zero experience to flight instructor, with the instrument, commercial and multi-engine ratings on the way, in about nine months. It is $89,000 with multi-engine included, the lowest published career price in Southern California once multi-engine is counted. Most career students live in shared housing near the airport, and discovery flights also go from John Wayne.

Other options in Southern California

ATP Flight School

Long Beach, Riverside, La Verne, Carlsbad, San Diego, Camarillo

The largest career school in the country. Its program has the same certificates and the same 282 hours as ours, in Piper Archers and Cessna 172s with Piper Seminole twins, for $123,995 and up. Some locations add a training center premium of up to $5,000. CFII vs ATP, line by line

Sling Pilot Academy

Torrance, Long Beach, Santa Monica, San Diego

Glass-cockpit Sling airplanes on the coast. The Los Angeles career program is $105,995 and up, planned over 12 months of weekday training. CFII vs Sling, line by line

OCFC (Orange County Flight Center)

John Wayne (SNA)

At John Wayne since 1981, with more than 12,000 students trained. Its full-time airline program is $86,000 without the multi-engine rating, which adds $14,335. The fleet is Cessna 172s built from 1973 to 2021 and a 1969 Cessna 310 twin. A good fit for Irvine and Newport, renting by the hour and flying part time.

Prices are each school's published zero-experience career program, checked October 2026, with Sling's for its Los Angeles locations. Examiner fees are extra everywhere, ours included.

How far is Riverside?

Why students drive inland

Fewer mornings lost to the marine layer
Coastal fields often sit under low cloud on spring and summer mornings. Riverside is inland, so the morning lesson usually goes when you booked it.
A training airport, not an airline one
No airline traffic to wait behind, a control tower, a 5,401 foot runway and an instrument landing system. Busy enough to learn the radio, quiet enough to fly the lesson.
The coast is still your training area
Your cross-country flights run down the shoreline and over the harbors. You learn in some of the busiest airspace in the country without starting every lesson inside it.
Housing next to the airport
Training full time from Orange County or LA is a long commute. Most of our career students live in shared student housing near the field instead.

How to choose a flight school

Southern California has dozens of flight schools, from Long Beach and Torrance to Fullerton, Chino and Riverside. Ask every one of them these questions, us included.

  1. 1.How old are the airplanes?

Many trainers in California were built in the 1970s. Ask the year, the avionics and how often one is down for maintenance.

  2. 2.How many students per airplane?

That ratio is your real schedule. A school with more students than airplanes rations lessons.

  3. 3.Who will my instructor be in six months?

Instructor turnover is normal at schools that feed the airlines. Ask what happens when yours leaves.

  4. 4.What is the total price, in writing?

Hourly rates hide the total. Ask for the price to your goal, what is not included, and the refund policy.

  5. 5.Part 61 or Part 141?

Two rulebooks for the same certificates. It matters for a few students, mostly those using the GI Bill or certain loans.

  6. 6.Can I fly before I commit?

Any good school will put you in the airplane with an instructor before you sign anything.

Questions

Does CFII fly in Orange County?

Yes, for discovery flights and private pilot lessons, which go from John Wayne Airport (SNA) in Santa Ana. The Career Track trains at Riverside Municipal Airport (KRAL), about 35 to 50 minutes from most of Orange County and about an hour from Long Beach and downtown Los Angeles without traffic. Many of our career students move to student housing near the airport while they train.

How much does flight school cost in Southern California?

It depends on the goal. Our Career Track, zero experience to flight instructor with multi-engine, is $89,000. ATP publishes $123,995 or more for a comparable program, Sling Pilot Academy $105,995 or more, and OCFC $100,335 with multi-engine. For a private pilot certificate alone, ask any school for the total to the checkride, not the hourly rate.

What is the best flight school in California?

The one where you can fly three or more times a week, in a well-kept airplane, with an instructor who will still be there next month. We think that is us: factory-new airplanes with a parachute on every one, and a lower published career price than ATP, Sling or OCFC once multi-engine is included. Ask every school the questions on this page and compare the answers in writing.

How does CFII compare with OCFC in Orange County?

OCFC trains at John Wayne Airport in Cessna 172s built between 1973 and 2021. Its full-time airline program is $86,000 before the multi-engine rating and $100,335 with it. Our Career Track is $89,000 with multi-engine included, in factory-new airplanes with a parachute, at Riverside Municipal. Our discovery flights also go from John Wayne.

Can I finance flight school?

Yes. Our lending partner Stratus Financial finances the full Career Track, with payments deferred 12 months.

Is there a flight school near me in the Inland Empire?

Yes, we are at Riverside Municipal Airport, a short drive from Corona, Norco, Eastvale, Jurupa Valley and Moreno Valley.
